How to Cover "the Chinese Century"

No matter where you are in the world, China, or "Made in China," has never felt so close and seemingly inevitable. The world urgently needs to understand better what China’s rising influence means, but the country has increasingly resisted journalistic probing from domestic reporters and restricted visas for foreign correspondents. How do newsrooms like WIRED cover China from afar, weaving together official announcements, online sources, and lived experiences of Chinese influence? Zeyi Yang, Senior Writer at WIRED, will talk about reporting on China from the US with a focus on the US-China technology landscape. He’ll also be available to answer all your questions about pop culture and internet memes in China.

Zeyi Yang is a senior writer at WIRED, covering technology and business in China. Before WIRED, he worked at MIT Technology Review and Protocol. He received the 2024 American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) NEXT Award and several other honors.

Co-hosted by the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School.
